As you can see, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bringing about a massive shift in the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). For months, digital marketers and website owners were in the dark regarding how their content was performing or would perform in AI-generated search results. They often had to rely on guesswork to estimate their visibility. Now, that era of guesswork is coming to an end. Google has officially launched a dedicated 'Search Generative AI Performance Report' within Google Search Console. This will provide insights into how websites appear in AI-powered results.
What does the report reveal?
The new reporting feature presents data separately for Google's core generative AI search features (such as AI Overviews and AI modes) and generative AI elements within Google Discover. Website owners can assess their visibility using five key data dimensions:
Impressions: How often specific URLs from your site are referenced or cited as sources in AI-generated answers.
- Pages: A clear view of which URLs Google's large language models are selecting as trustworthy sources.
- Countries: Geographic data showing where your presence is strongest in AI-powered search.
- Devices: Analytics indicating whether users are viewing your content on desktop, tablet, or mobile devices (available for search).
- Dates: Detailed tracking of performance trends over time, including daily, weekly, or monthly timelines.
Understanding current limitations
While this launch represents a major milestone for SEO analytics, there is a significant limitation to these reports: they do not include click data. Currently, the console only displays impression metrics. Website owners can see that their content was cited as the basis for AI results, but they cannot track whether a user clicked the link, what the click-through rate (CTR) was, or which specific user query triggered that result. Google has stated that additional metrics may be added over time, but for now, impressions remain the primary measure of visibility.
Rollout and Control
Alongside these performance reports, Google has provided an 'opt-out toggle.' This gives publishers direct control to prevent their site's content from being used as the basis for AI Overviews and AI modes, without negatively impacting their traditional organic search rankings.
The search generative AI performance reporting tools are currently being rolled out to a small group of website owners (starting with users in the UK) before a wider global launch. As this feature expands worldwide, it will provide marketers with the data needed to optimize content for information extraction, strengthen their authority on specific topics, and successfully navigate the era of AI-driven search.
